9.4.1.1 Creating Flat Fields
Ideally, a flat field is created by taking a set of images (submasters) of a field such that each pixel is equally illuminated by a light source that matches the spectral characteristics of the field for the science frame. The submasters are combined to create the master flat, which is then is then applied to the science frame by multiplication or division. That’s it. Things are much easier in Theory.
9.4.2 Flat Fields: In Practice
The requirements of even illumination and similar spectral response are difficult to achieve. How to do so is what raises the most debate and those hushed conversations in back rooms. There are several common ways of trying to achieve these goals. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some people have had great success with a particular method while others have failed miserably when trying it. Few things are ever easy in Practice but, again, don’t let this daunt you. This is going to be a time when “good enough” really can be good enough.
